Science Academies

WEEK 1 (June 26-June 30)

Forensics: Future Crime Scene Investigators will learn practical forensics in a hands-on manner and apply them to mock crime scenes. Learn about lifting a fingerprint or determining what type of bicycle tire made the tracks, and examine items using a black light. This academy will definitely broaden your science knowledge. Open to Campers entering 3rd-8th grade.

Robotics: Campers will learn the fundamental engineering and technical principles of building and programming robots to move and function. Through the use of sound, light, and touch sensors, campers will be able to program their robots to "see, hear, and perceive" their surroundings. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

Shark Week! An in-depth discovery and learning of all things related to sharks. Campers will learn about these apex predators and how they interact with and effect all the species they encounter. We’ll talk about how sharks anatomy differs from other fish, making them more efficient at hunting. Close attention will be given to their structure, skin, sense of smell, and tooth characteristics.  Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

 

WEEK 2 (July 3-July 7)

Campus Science: Science comes to life in this explorative and experiment based Academy. Campers will have a blast getting down and dirty with science featuring several new hands on experiments each day. This is perfect for any child that wants to learn more about science. Open to Campers entering 1st-5th grade.

Ichthyology: Love learning about fish? This academy will give in-depth details about numerous species of both freshwater and saltwater fish. Topics will include structure and morphology, biology and behavior. We’ll learn how and when it’s best to fish in local waters and what you may find here. Tips for fishing locations and tackle and bait to use will be discussed. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

Survive the Wild: Campers get to experience how our ancestors and Native Americans survived before electricity. Hands on activities will include, making rope, tracking wildlife, identifying wild edibles and medicinal plants and making tools and accessories. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

 

WEEK 3 (July 10-July 14)

Myth Busters Campers will explore interesting myths in the world of science; they will be able to experiment, create and invent some myth-busting ideas. Discover the difference between Myth and Fact in this exciting and educational academy. Open to Campers entering 2nd-6th grade

WEEK 4 (July 17-July 21)

Exploring the Ecosystem: Campers will discover and study micro-invertebrates found in our local water ways and embayments. They will discover the millions of organisms that make up the largest portion of the food pyramid. Algae, bacteria, baby fish, larval stage insects and all things that make up the plankton empire. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

Going Wild: Get back to basics and experience the natural world through wilderness survival skills, nature mentoring and community building activities! Together we’ll create our own base camp and learn to use the natural resources of the forest, craft primitive tools, search for animal tracks, play wilderness games, share stories and explore the beauty of the wild. Open to Campers entering 5th-8th grade.

Meet the Reptiles: Reptiles, either you love them or hate them...Well, we LOVE them!!  Come meet LIVE Reptiles!  This academy covers the 4 main groups of Reptiles (Snakes, Lizards, Turtles, and Alligators) using a combination of hands-on animal artifacts and live animals. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

Going Wild: Get back to basics and experience the natural world through wilderness survival skills, nature mentoring and community building activities! Together we’ll create our own base camp and learn to use the natural resources of the forest, craft primitive tools, search for animal tracks, play wilderness games, share stories and explore the beauty of the wild. Open to Campers entering 5th-8th grade.

Meet the Mammals: Mammals certainly hold a special place in the human heart, or else we wouldn't have cats and dogs living in our homes!  Join us as we explore the fascinating characteristics of Mammals, including whales, bats, raccoons, bears, cows, horses, and so many more.  A VERY hands-on approach to learning, we will be touching a whole array of furs, bones, and skulls, as well as meeting a LIVE Mammal!  Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

Underwater Farming: Campers will be introduced to this specialized branch of aquaculture. Exploration of the cultivation of marine organisms for food will be facilitated through classroom presentation, video, and projects. Labs will include in class tank work, and some real hands on sea farming field! Special attention will be paid to the fragile web of life and how proper farming technique can promote and preserve a healthy balance. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

 

WEEK 6 (July 31- August 4)

A Whale of a Week: Campers will be immersed in all things cetacean related. Presentations, art projects, videos all pertaining to whales and their environments. Lab work will include bone and tooth identification. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

Investigate the Great South Bay Learn about your immediate surroundings: local history and environment, what impact does the Bay have on us all? Campers will learn details about the waterways we live near and how they interact. We’ll discover facts about plant and animal life found right in our own backyards, as well as what’s next door and under the water. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

Underwater Farming: Campers will be introduced to this specialized branch of aquaculture. WEEK 7 (August 7-August 11)

Flight Club: Campers have the opportunity to learn about flying and create different flying devices. They will review the history of aviation in our country and explore the future of different forms of air transportation including DRONES in this fun academy. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

Marine Plants & Animal Identification: Campers will learn to identify a host of local marine plants and animals. Through introduction of basic categories, campers will learn to use resource materials to discover, identify, and learn more about the vast plant and animal life Long Island has to offer. Classwork, art projects, video, and field exploration will be incorporated to aid us in our journey of discovery. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

Secrets of the Deep Campers will discover what lies beneath the sea, lakes, ponds, bays and rivers. We will learn similarities and differences in geographical formations, substrates at the bottom, water qualities, temperatures and forms of life associated with each type of body of water. This is an in depth investigation of all that is underwater taught by a real Oceanographer. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

Squids & Spineless Wonders Campers will discover the world of the marine invertebrates. Squids, snails, sponges, crabs, corals, worms and on and on and on…no other kingdom is as diverse and colorful as this. Presentations, art projects, videos all pertaining to marine invertebrates and their environments. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.

WEEK 9 (August 21-August 25)

If you Build it… In this academy, campers will construct 2-D and 3-D art with a variety of materials including plaster, wood, tile and cement to name a few! Projects that will make any garden or home something to talk about!  Campers will work together and separately to collaborate on different projects throughout the week. Campers will also learn the basics of construction and proper measure to ensure quality work. Open to Campers entering 2nd-8th grade.
